Understanding The Brief

Conscious of the mood of the nation reflecting the rising cost of living, we were tasked with spreading optimism throughout the city of Birmingham through a series of digital-first festive communications.

We set about reimagining local landmarks from across the Birmingham region, to decorate key locations across the city with events to explore and discover - spreading joy just in time for Christmas.

Finding The Unfound

Leveraging civic pride within the vibrant city we delivered ten festive moments as gifts from Birmingham, to the communities and people that make it what it is. The ten visuals celebrated seasonal moments that were low cost or free of charge.

This one-off campaign included festive illustrations, playful verbal messaging and engaging motion design, all captured in physical activations across a metropolis at the heart of the UK.

Under The Surface

Distilling the pure joy of Christmas during a challenging time of the cost of living crisis, the campaign needed to decorate the city’s streets with cheer as well as being a way for people to connect with the fun, accessible experiences that could be had across the city, without breaking the bank.

Building on the ‘BE BOLD BE BIRMINGHAM’ slogan, we reflected the city’s colourful personality through crisp, tongue-in-cheek copy, an eye-catching colour palette and whimsical animations — all wrapped up in a recognisable ‘Gifts From Birmingham’ identity.

Unearthing Value

This campaign enabled people to enjoy unique elements of the city of Birmingham, whether old, young, local or from further afield — moments for everyone whatever their financial situation. Charming animations brought local landmarks to life and encouraged connection, whether from footfall traffic or commuters passing by, the visuals directed people to online landing pages through easy-to-use QR codes.

The campaign was broadcast live across 200+ OOH screens, gaining over 5 million plays through the month of December. Additionally, across Birmingham City Council’s social media channels, the campaign clocked up 10,000+ impressions.
